HUMMER . How to Set Up CoiloversCoilovers are very popular suspension components, because they allow the owner to fine tune the vehicle's height with a few turns of a wrench. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Tape measure Pen and paper Jack Jack stands Step by Step : 1 Measure the distance between the ground and the top of the fender, and record this measurement with the paper and pen. This will be your before measurement and will give you an idea of where you need to go. 2 Raise the front of the vehicle using the jack and secure the vehicle on jack stands. Make sure the vehicle is solidly on the jacks before you work on the car. 3 Turn the coilover wrench provided with your coilovers either up or down depending on which direction you want the vehicle to go. If you want the car to have a lower center of gravity, turn it down. If you want it higher, go the opposite direction. 4 Lower the vehicle off the jack stands and remeasure the distance from your fender to the ground. Ideally, you want both fenders to be the same height. 5 Repeat the process if your numbers don't match, or if you still need to fine-tune the height. 6 Repeat the process for the rear suspension.
HUMMER . How to Lower My Car?Lowering a car provides better handling and a cool look that's very popular. It may seem like a lot of work, but here are some tips to get you through the process. In this case, we're doing the work on a 1996 Honda Civic, but the process is the similar for many vehicles. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Open-end wrench set 3/8 ratchet and socket set Allen key set Spring compressor Jack Jack stands Tire iron Lowering springsFront Suspension Step by Step : 1 Jack the vehicle up in the air using the jack and support the body on jack stands. Make sure that all four wheels are off the ground and that everything is secure before you remove the jack and crawl underneath it. 2 Remove all four wheels with the tire iron and place them to the side. 3 Unbolt the bolt that secures the bottom of the strut to the fork connected to the lower control arm using the 3/8-inch ratchet and a 14-mm socket. 4 Unbolt the bottom of the fork using the 3/8-inch ratchet with a 17 mm socket with an open-end wrench on the other side. 5 Pop the hood and unbolt the two bolts that secure the strut to the strut tower using the 3/8-inch ratchet and a 14 mm socket. While doing this, hold the strut in your other hand so that it doesn't fall on the floor. 6 Remove the strut from the car and place on the floor. 7 Assemble the spring compressor on the spring mounted to the strut. You want to set up the clamps as far apart as possible for maximum effect. 8 Tighten down the spring compressor as far down as possible using the 3/8-inch ratchet, alternating from side to side. You want to relieve as much pressure as possible from the strut so it doesn't pop out and cause damage. 9 Place an allen key in the top of the strut and loosen the nut on the strut cap with an open-end wrench. The allen key will keep the strut from spinning. Remove the strut cap once the bolt is off completely. Step by Step : 10 Remove the spring from the strut and install the lowering spring onto the strut. You may be able to reinstall the strut cap and nut without using the spring compressors, but if you have to, compress the spring using the spring compressors in the same manner as done in Step 8. Step by Step : 11 Reinstall the strut in the reverse order of removal. Rear Suspension Step by Step : 1 Unbolt the strut from the lower control arm using a 3/8-inch ratchet and a 14 mm socket. 2 Climb into the trunk and peel back the carpet to reveal the strut towers. Unbolt the two bolts with a 3/8-inch ratchet and a 14 mm socket. 3 Repeat Steps 6 through 10 from the front suspension tips. 4 Reinstall the strut in the reverse order of removal. 5 Bolt the wheels back on the vehicle, and lower it back on the ground and off the jack stands. You will have to drive the vehicle for a few days before the full effects of the lowering springs take hold, as the springs will settle under the weight of the car. Tips & Warnings Always be careful when handling springs, as they are under extreme pressure. *V A lugs with an L is left-threaded. Turn it clockwise to loosen it. For the purposes of sanity, I'll assume that your car has right-threaded nuts. If you have a couple of lefties, just turn the wrench in the opposite direction as you follow these steps to loosen the lug nuts: 1. Find the end of the wrench that fits the lug nuts on your car, and fit it onto the first nut. Part I: Getting Started. Always work on lug nuts in rotation. That way, you won't forget to tighten any later. 2. Apply all your weight to the bar on the left. This starts turning the nut counterclockwise, which loosens it. If the nut has been put on with a power tool and you can't get it started, a piece of hollow pipe, fitted over that left-hand arm of the cross-shaft wrench, magically adds enough leverage to start the nut easily (see Figure 1-4). After you replace the nut yourself, this aid is no longer necessary. But remember, the longer the arms on your lug wrench, the more leverage you have. Figure 1-4: 129

Don't remove the lug nuts completely; just get them loose enough so that you can remove them by hand after raising the car (a feat explained in an earlier section of this chapter, "The Safe Way to Use a Jack"). Changing the tire Once the vehicle is safely jacked up and the lug nuts are off, follow these instructions to change the tire: 1. Remove the spare from the trunk if you haven't already done so. Actually, it's easier to do this before jacking up the car. If you haven't checked your spare recently, keep your fingers crossed that it has enough air in it! Roll the spare to the scene of the action. 2. Grasp the flat tire with both hands and pull it toward you. The flat tire sits on the exposed bolts that the lug nuts screwed onto. As you pull the flat off, it should slide along the bolts until, suddenly, it . Chapter 1: Things Every Driver Should Know O 2 HUMMER . If this is the case, a bit of ingenuity may help; see the sidebar "A little ingenuity goes a long way" for details. 5. After you have the spare tire in place, replace the lug nuts and tighten them by hand. Give each lug nut a jolt with the wrench to get it firmly into place, but wait until the car is on the ground before you really try to tighten the lug nuts.
